What sequestration means

 In the summer of 2011, a congressional committee was formed to find $1.2 trillion in spending reductions and revenue increases in the federal budget. The committee could not reach an agreement, so in January 2013 automatic spending cuts will go into effect. Roughly $100 billion each year, for 10 years, must be cut from the federal budget. Half the funds will come from national security, and the other half from all other federal agencies.

National security providers, which have a significant presence in Hampton Roads, will begin feeling the effects of these cuts by this summer. In the private sector, companies will begin layoffs in preparation for deeper cuts. By the fall, sequestration will begin in earnest and will be felt across our region.

 On May 14, Rep. Randy Forbes of Virginia Beach and others from Congress will be holding a listening session at the Chesapeake Conference Center. After you attend this gathering, contact your elected leaders in Congress and demand that sequestration be rolled back.

06.01.12 - OSHA 10-Hour Maritime #7615

The OSHA 10-hour course awards the 10-hour certification card and meets all of the mandated regulations for Maritime Industry (OSHA Code of Federal Regulations 29 CFR 1915) course 7615 in a format that specifically addresses the challenges and environmental conditions specific to shipyards. In addition, ship yard specific regulations and issues are covered in depth. Instructors are authorized by OSHA endorsed certification programs. The completion card is valid for 5 years at which time the course must be repeated. Our instructors a OSHA accepted certified to conduct this class and grant the award of certification cards. Cards are issued through the Instructor’s certifying body. All book, material and certification costs are covered in the course fee. » more

06.11.12 - NAVSEA Cableway (June 11-15)

Over the past few years many of our members have requested the Cableway Certification Training. After looking at many options, we are finally able to offer the NAVSEA Cableway Certification course. This course is under the oversight of AMSEC and upon successful completion attendees will receive a NAVSEA Cableway Certification card. The cableway program provides NAVSEA Cableway training and certification to students. This training and certification provides students with the safety and knowledge to inspect ship cableways and identify and correct all category 1 & 2 discrepancies to include: the removal of dead-end cables; repair of wire way discrepancies; and the correction of all fire zone and water-tight discrepancies. The course provides 35+ hours of lecture, video, hands-on-lab work, and text based assignments over a five day period. A score 70% or higher on the comprehensive exam is required for successful completion. The course covers all NAVSEA requirements and skill sets in depth. » more

Preparing your students for the NBPI course saves your company time and money. The VSRA NBPI Prep course focuses on the areas students have the most difficulty in learning and passing on the Inspector exam. These areas are math, Standard Items 009-32 and applicable portions of 009-04, proper use of instruments and specific complex coatings documentation.
