Objectives:

  • Ensure each signalpersons is in compliance with the requirements of OSHA section 1926.1428
  • All students will:

-          Know and understand when signals are required

-          Know and understand the type of signals used

-          Know and understand the proper method for signal communication by voice

-          Be competent in the application of the type of signals used

-          Have a basic understanding of equipment operation and limitations, including the crane dynamics involved in swinging and topping loads and boom deflection from hoisting loads

-          Demonstrate that he/she meets the requirements to give signals through an oral or written test, and through a practical test

Program: This program is 4-hrs of classroom instruction with on written exam followed by individual practical exams.

Course Topics: OSHA Regulations, section 1926.1400 – Equipment operation and limitations – Crane dynamics and boom deflection – Crane set-up and placement of outriggers – When is a signalperson required – Crane hand signals – Stop and emergency stop signal – Hand signal charts – Voice communication & the 3 voice elements – Electronic Transmission of signals – Testing electronic signal device – Transmission through a dedicated channel – Audible signals – New signals – Non standard hand signals – Suitability of signals – Signals from the operators perspective – Agreement between operator and signalperson – Signals from personnel platform – Signaling multiple cranes – Maintaining signal transmission – Relaying signals – Keeping boom within minimum allowable radius – What to do if power line contact is made – Working in the vicinity of power lines
