The path to a shipyard career often begins with a position as a Firewatch, Trade Helper or Apprentice. Apprentice programs are rigorous and workers are often more successful if they begin in an entry-level position forst to obtain some key critical skills and knowledge such as:
- Learning the words and terms used in shipyards that aren't used in oher workplaces
- Learning about basic tools and their proper use
- Learning about the variety of trades jobs available so the worker can choose a position best suited to their interests
