NOTE: The following description is a GENERAL Overview of this career and not a description of a particular job posting. Surge Force is actively seeking talented and highly motivated Shipfitters. Must have knowledge and technical experience to layout, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble and install various metal structural parts of a ship, boat, small craft and other vessels. The shipfitter must be experienced in working with different metals used in ship construction and repair. *Other duties as assigned/required.* Template creation Working with presses, floor shaping, forming plates, shaping from templates, marking symbols, doors, hatches and scuttles, rolls, presses and blacksmith shop Laying out blueprints and outfitting items Laying out blueprints, checking and fitting materials, tack welding of various sub-assemblies peculiar to the panel line and shell area such as decks, bulkheads, side shells Working on ship ways with the erection of units and installation of structural items Installation of structural outfit items, doors, ladders, foundations Effective sequencing of assembly and fitting Correct use of heating torches in plate heat straightening and shrinkage Ability to use hand and power tools Shop and field fabrication Adherence to industry codes, regulations, and specifications Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates Tack welding Install simple systems without templates and blueprints Bulkhead and deck inserting Riveted and deck inserting Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons report and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work Other duties as assigned Understand and act upon instruction Work independently to complete responsibilities Must meet the required qualifications to be considered: Resume or Application experience working in a shipyard/ship repair environment Pass a DRUG TEST and BACKGROUND CHECK OSHA 10 Apply now!! Shipfitters will layout and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames within the hull of a vessel for riveting or welding. Shipfitters use such tools as shears, punches, drill presses, bending rolls, bending slabs, furnaces, saws, and metal presses up to 750 tons. Also, Shipfitters will need to be proficient in the use of Oxygen Acetylene cutting procedures, and have the ability to tack weld. Typical layout work will consist of preparing plates for shearing, planning and bench planning, angles for punching and shearing, making collars, brackets for installation, furnaced plate, airports and manholes. Typical installation tasks will be deck ladders, fittings for riggings, mooring equipment ventilating equipment, oil-tight hatches, dry cargo hatches and braces, king posts and masts, engine room floor plates, engine room grating, shell castings, stern frames, anchor handling, and stem casting. Fabrication assignments may consists of plumbing a transverse bulkhead, lifting a shell frame from a vessel, construction of and/or duplicating structural parts. The Shipfitter is familiar with such equipment as hydraulic jacks and pumps, steamboat ratchets, strongbacks, yokes, dogs and wedges, pneumatic tools and chalk lines.
Compensation
National Median wages (2010): $16.60 hourly, $34,530 annually

VSRA Median Wage Report: $19.07 hourly
VSRA Shipfitter Entry-level/Helper: $13.73 hourly
Education
Most shipfitter careers require training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, and/or experience is required for these occupations, particularly in the use of career-related tools and work in a marine setting.
