Ship Trades Apprenticeship Program

Are you looking for hands-on experiences in the trade’s field while at the same time earning class credits and getting paid? Look no further than Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc.’s Apprenticeship Program. Our Apprenticeship Program provides employment while learning a skilled trade under the guidance of experienced craftspeople. Apprentices are employed fulltime and earn a competitive wage while advancing to the journeyman level. By attending classes at Tidewater Community College and receiving on-the-job training, we will invest in your training and development, and provide you with the technical skills you’ll need to be successful in your respective trade. WE ARE HIRING FOR THE FOLLOWING TRADES: Fabricator/Welder: you will be building of metal structures by cutting, bending, and assembling processes. You will specialize in fusing materials together. The materials to be joined can be metals (such as steel, aluminum, brass, stainless steel etc.) Pipefitter: you will be involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam heating, and steam-generating systems Inside Machinist: you will learn how to operate various machine tools (including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and spindles) to produce precision metal parts in large quantities Outside Machinist: you will learn how to remove, repair, overhaul, install and align main propulsion machinery and associated equipment/components Electrician: you will be involved in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in various areas Apprenticeships are a blend of classroom and paid, on-the-job training. Typically, this will be 144+ hours in the classroom (community college and internal classroom instruction) and 2000+ hours on the job, and last about 4 years. Apprentices learn theory, mathematics, document writing, how to read blueprints and schematics, safety, and more. Once training is complete, Apprentices become journeyman level. Responsibilities PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to: Sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, reach, push, pull, stoop, crawl, kneel, balance, lift and carry various objects and equipment Use hands to handle objects, to control objects and/or tools Reach with hands and arms Work in confined spaces such as boilers, tanks and voids Access areas of facility and vessels by inclined and vertical ladders Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED 18 years of age or older High school diploma or G.E.D Must test into college ready Math and English courses via the Tidewater Community College Virginia Placement Test Demonstrate a reasonable degree of mechanical, math, and verbal aptitude Must pass pre-employment to include a physical and drug test by company physician Physically able to perform the essential duties of the trade requested or assigned You must upload the following documents with your application: Applications will not be considered complete until all of the documents are uploaded. 1-Virginia Placement Test Scores from Tidewater Community College 2-Copy of High School diploma or GED 3-Copy of College Transcripts (if attended) Compensation & Benefits Position compensation is based on a graduated pay scale. Every 6 months, the Apprentice will be evaluated on skill, performance, attendance, grades, etc. and will be eligible for the next increase per the evaluation.
