Job Title: Marine Installation Mechanic Location: Virginia Beach, VA Job type: Full time General Description / Language to Use for Job Postings: The Installation Mechanic is the skilled trade person which assembles, installs, lags/insulates, prepares/prime/preserves installation surfaces, and repairs pre-fabricated Habitability and HVAC equipment, such as berthing lockers, sleep spaces, laundry, food service and sanitary space equipment, vent ducting, compartment partitions, stowage, and counter spaces. The Installation Mechanic works in a shipyard environment with exposure to heights, confined spaces, and extreme weather conditions. The Installation Mechanic ensures that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards. Reports to: Team Leader Responsibilities: • Must have a thorough knowledge of reading and understanding arrangement and construction blueprints; have the ability to accomplish installation, alteration, repair and the ability to develop and transpose from drawing to installation in naval ships. • Installation Mechanic should provide a working knowledge of material selection, trade mathematics, interpreting blueprint, technical instructions, and manuals. • Possess knowledge of assembly and installation of shipboard furniture and habitability related equipment (i.e. used in galleys, offices, berthing compartments and laundries equipment). Minimum Educational Qualifications: • High school degree or equivalent GED and completed, in this trade, a shipyard apprenticeship program or a supplemental technical/vocational training beyond high school or on the job training in the shipboard industry. Minimum Previous Experience: • Minimum of (2) years’ of shipboard installation mechanic working experience. • Be at journeyman level of trade competence • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and be physically agile to perform tasks in U.S. Naval ships. Minimum Additional Training: • Must pass an occupational physical and respirator fit test. • 1st Class Install Mechanic experience • Confined Space (OSHA 1915.12(d) • OSHA Compliant Environmental Sampling • 10 hour OSHA training • Brush & Roller (BR) iaw SSPC QP-1 • Insulation (iaw NSTM-CH635/NSI 009-11 Other: • Must be a US citizen • Must be able to access government installations • Must be able to walk, crawl, climb ladders and climb stairs without restriction • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen Note: Due to the nature of the work, crossing of trade boundaries will be required (i.e., paint touch up will not require a painter in most cases, each person will clean up after themselves thus not requiring sweeper/cleaners, mechanics will be expected to rig their own gear vice needing rigging, etc.
