Marine Electrician III

Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, modifies, and maintains U.S. Navy shipboard electrical/electronic systems, circuits and equipment. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent with at least 7-10 years of experience in the field or in a related area; may have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Need to be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks; directs and leads the work of others. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required; typically reports to a supervisor/manager. Works aboard U.S. Navy Surface ships, performs shipboard repairs, and installs simple and/or complex modifications to electrical equipment utilizing plans, schematics, sketches, blue prints or written and/or verbal instructions. Repairs; troubleshoots, replaces electrical equipment including: motor and logic controllers, switchboard mods, load centers, buss transfer switches, electrical circuits and tests specialized electrical systems; able to do work of an electrician under general supervision, maybe asked to provide guidance to entry level electricians as well as perform additional non electrician related duties as assigned. PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: - Provide Senior level leadership within an industrial shop as required or shipboard during ship repair availabilities - Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, cables and equipment. - Uses hand tools and electrical testing equipment. - Inspects and tests electrical equipment, lighting, signal, communication and power circuits. - Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment using general and specialized testing equipment. - Replaces faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems. - Dismantles electrical machinery and replaces defective electrical or mechanical parts such as gears, brushes, and armatures. - Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications. - Works from drawings, blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams. - Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. - Participates in special projects as required. - High School diploma or GED, plus technical/vocational training or the equivalent combination of education, technical training or work experience. - Electrician's license or connector certification may be required. - A minimum of 7 years of U.S. Navy surface ship electrical system repairs, testing and troubleshooting experience; experience working with Navy cargo/weapons elevators is preferred but not mandatory. - Experience installing and troubleshooting Standard Electronic Modules (SEMs) and Programmable Logic Controllers is a plus. - The ability to provide guidance to entry level electricians. - The ability to perform complex electrical work on board US Navy Ships. - The ability to read and interpret complex NAVSEA drawings and/or sketches. - The ability to follow written and verbal instructions. - An understanding of power tools and their usage. - The knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in the testing and repair of electrical components. - A working Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items 009-07, 022, and 073, Latest Edition. The work is typically performed in an industrial, ship board or shipyard environment which requires proper safety equipment and precautions; Work requires some physical effort in the handling of heavy materials, boxes, tools or equipment, and climbing vertical shipboard ladders. HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED: To be considered for this position, you must demonstrate the ability to do the work of an Electrician under normal supervision. In addition, you must demonstrate knowledge of the electrical equipment that are common to the Electrician trade onboard Naval vessels; demonstrate the ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading); demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot; and the ability to apply technical practices (theoretical, precise) when performing work in the trade. Working Conditions: Work is performed onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation and the like and with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death. Applicant must be willing to travel to various work sites such as San Diego, CA, Everett WA, Pearl Harbor HI, Mayport FL & Yokosuka Japan. Applicant must be willing to work second or thirds shift as needed. Applicants also must be willing to work more than 40 hours work weeks. They must be willing to carry more than 50 lbs while climbing dry dock stairs and ladders to access ships in various shipyards
