20th Annual VSRA Safety & Health Seminar - A Great Success!

The VSRA 20th Annual Safety & Health Seminar was held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. This year’s theme was “Safety: Not a Spectator Sport.”

The Seminar was a great success due to the diligent efforts of the 17 members of the Safety Seminar planning committee led by John Davis of Crofton Diving Corporation. Over 238 participants representing over 55 of our VSRA member companies attended.

This year’s seminar was sponsored by 23 companies.  Over 27 sponsor representatives attended and had attractive displays.

Many thanks to the 17 keynote speakers and presenters whose presentations provided attendees timely and beneficial information vital to safety in the ship repair industry. We wish to thank Joe Campbell, Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems Ship Repair, who was the opening keynote speaker.  The following seminar topics were on this year’s agenda: "Hot Work;” “Rigging – Hardware & Sling Inspection;" "Situational Awareness – Mobile Equipment and You;" "Safety Audit – What to Expect;" "OSHA Update;" "Lock-Out-Tag-Plus – Hazard Identification;" "Portable Powered Hand Tools;" and "Fall Protection / Demonstration." The lunch keynote speakers were Gretchen Watson and Sara Aridas with Safety and Learning Solutions, who presented on "The Power of One:  What You Say and How You Say It Matters." James Sammons with Signal Administration presented on “What Challenges you not to Speak Up about Safety?”

Additional highlights of the event were the “Jeopardy Game” and numerous prize drawings.  Plans are already underway for next year’s 21st Annual Safety & Health Seminar.

Please plan on supporting safety by sponsoring this important event in 2016.
