Newsletter: April/May 2010 Newsletter

APRIL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Our guest speakers will be Tom Vaughan, Board Champion of READY WHEN THE TIME COMES (RWTC) and Pam Wakefield, Disaster Services Manager, Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross. They will discuss a new program, READY WHEN THE TIME COMES. RWTC is a program of the American Red Cross that provides volunteers from partner companies and community organizations to be immediately ready to help in the time of a local, large-scale disaster. RWTC volunteers serve as “reserves” that can be called up when disaster response requires more than the normal corps of local disaster volunteers.

Each year, the American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disaster incidents – hurricanes, fires, storms, floods, tornados, explosions, etc. – serving those affected with shelter, mass care and financial assistance.  This requires not only Red Cross employees and trained disaster volunteers but also specially trained, quickly mobilized volunteers who can fill specific needs. RWTC is designed to recruit and prepare those volunteers. Please come and learn more about this much-needed program.

MARCH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Our guest speaker was Capt. Tim Corrigan, USN, Director, Surface Ship Life Cycle Management Activity. Partnering with the Fleet, the SSLCM Activity assesses and manages the maintenance requirements throughout the life cycle of surface ships, enabling more precise and accurate planning and budgeting. The SSLCM is modeled after two successful and similar programs; the Submarine Maintenance Engineering Planning and Procurement (SUBMEPP) Activity and the Carrier Planning Activity (CPA).

SSLCM is conducting a detailed technical review of surface ship class maintenance plans to make certain we understand the full maintenance requirement necessary to reach expected service life for these platforms. SSLCM has completed the update on two of our larger ship classes, the DDG 51 and the LSD 41/49 classes. They are currently working on the CG 47 and LHA 4 classes. Next year, they plan to complete the LPD-17 and LCS classes.

SSLCM is now the designated life cycle organization responsible for maintaining the Integrated Class Maintenance Plans, building availability work packages, and providing technical oversight/approval for Fleet work deferral requests.

MAY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

We have extended an invitation to Virginia Senator Frank Wagner to be our guest speaker in May. He has been asked to provide a Commonwealth of Virginia legislative update.

RECENT NEW MEMBER COMPANIES

The Board of Directors approved the following new members:
            Railway Specialties Corporation
            Global Services Corporation
This brings VSRA’s total membership to 190 companies.

RAILWAY SPECIALTIES CORPORATION

Railway Specialties Corporation, founded in 1915, is now over 90 years old.  The company officers are third-generation of the founding family and remain highly focused on the precision design and reputable customer service that has been a mainstay of Railway Specialties Corporation products and services.  The main fabrication facility was established and remains in Bristol, PA since 1929. Through the years, we have continued to service the railroad and chemical industries, and for more than 60 years, we have continued to service the marine industry through U.S. Naval Shipyards as well as the many private shipyards throughout the world. In 1941, we were mobilized by the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy into production for the military and the war effort.  For the past 40 years, we have supplied ALL of the watertight doors, hatches and scuttles (along with a small variety of manholes) for ALL of the CVN Nuclear Aircraft Carriers in the U.S. Navy fleet.  These ships were all built by Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia.  We can proudly state that in this 30 years of service, we have never had a rejection due to quality or workmanship. We are at your service and take great pride in the quality of our products and our ability to provide on-time deliveries. Try us.  You will appreciate our experience and commitment to customer service.  We look forward to serving you and thank you for your interest.

GLOBAL SERVICES CORPORATION

Global Services Corp was established in 1997, initially to provide information technology support to the US Armed Forces.  Headquartered in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and with regional offices and facilities in California, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the company has expanded its core capabilities to include design and engineering, training, technology, logistics, administrative, and shipboard alteration services to military customers throughout the continental United States and at military facilities overseas. Presently, the company employs over 150 highly trained technical specialists located at its principal facilities and at individual military facilities located throughout the United States. Over 75 percent of the work force is comprised of veterans of the Armed Forces. The company was founded upon a firm commitment to quality, as expounded in its motto:“Quality, Competence, Integrity.”

EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES

By: Robert D. Cass, Mid Atlantic, PLLC

Hampton Roads is undeniably the birthplace of our national maritime heritage. It can be argued that the history of our region is the history of our country. From our humble beginnings, we have been building the ships that keep many countries safe, as well as keep commerce lanes open and bustling with the latest commercial vessels.

None of this should be taken for granted. If it weren’t for the extraordinary measures that small groups of patriots took, we might not look like the country we are today. Many of those men and women crossed paths in Hampton Roads at one time or another. Indeed, some of those small groups of patriots are still around and are still taking extraordinary measures to make sure that our interests are safe and our shipping lanes are filled with quality commercial vessels.

Some of those small groups can be seen in the midst of our very own Virginia Ship Repair Association. In this new millennium, we are not necessarily faced with the same challenges that our forefathers were faced with, but we are still faced with challenges. However, our challenges today are no less critical than the ones we faced as a country over 300 years ago. In fact, it may be said that our challenges today are far more complex. Patriots don’t necessarily look like they did back in revolutionary or civil war periods; but if you look closely, they are among us.

Steve Solomon, CFO of International Flooring and Protective Coatings, Inc. is a long-time supporter of VSRA. In order to keep jobs on track and under budget, Steve Solomon and his brother John have invested in climate-controlled containment. These are not your every day tents; these are mammoth, portable, climate-controlled super tents that allow time-sensitive work to be completed on schedule. This is what can be called an extraordinary measure. These types of commitments are no less patriotic than the ones that our forefathers have made. In the middle of cutbacks and economic downturn, we find companies and individuals digging deeply into their own reserves to make sure that we stay ahead of the rest of the world in the ship building community.

There are extraordinary measures being taken every day by those large and small companies that are committed to the strength of our nation, and it is humbling to know that many of them are long-standing members of the Virginia Ship Repair Association. To those patriot-companies that dig deeper and find extraordinary ways to keep us thriving, thank you.

ELIZABETH RIVER PROJECT

By: Hunter Frischkorn

In March, Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, the Executive Director of The Elizabeth River Project (“ERP”), addressed the Rotary Club of Norfolk.  For over seventeen years, she has championed the ambitious efforts of the non-profit organization by partnering with government, businesses and community organizers to restore one of our most polluted tributaries.   From the Swimmable Fishable Campaign of 2020 to Paradise Park, this non-profit organization has been one of the most creative and positive voices of environmental stewardship for our region.   It has even been recognized by the National Environmental Protection Agency as a nationwide model of how sustainable development organizations can partner with industry.

Currently, the Virginia Ship Repair Association and certain member companies such as Crofton Diving, Colonna's, BAE Systems and Earl Industries have taken leading roles in the maintenance of the Learning Barge, an environmental education vessel for students, while other VSRA members like Beach Marine Service, Marine Hydraulics and Metro Machine have been recognized by the ERP for their pollution prevention programs.

If either you or your organization is interested in contributing to the ERP, in becoming a River Star like one of the companies mentioned above, or just volunteering your time, please go to the link below to find out how you might become more involved.
