The August VSRA General Membership meeting of 2021 will be held in-person at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel on Tuesday, August 24th, 2021 at 12:00 P.M. The speaker for the meeting will be Assistant Secretary of the Navy (ASN) Frederick J. Stefany.

Anyone engaged in government contracting work knows that it is very different from working in the private sector. The CARES Act passed in March of last year illustrates this point. For most private sector companies, loans received under the Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”) were eligible to be fully forgiven and treated—essentially—like grants. There was no obligation on private sector businesses to refund these loans to the government. The whole purpose of the PPP program was to help businesses keep their doors open and their employees working during a global pandemic. Requiring private businesses to repay those loans would have defeated that purpose.

The Community College Workforce Cooperative (CCWC) is an exciting new collaboration between Camp, Thomas Nelson, and Tidewater community colleges designed to meet the large-scale job training needs in Hampton Roads. The impetus for this new effort is quite simple. The partners recognize that by combining their efforts they can better serve Hampton Roads employers through the delivery of truly innovative workforce programs. By Coordinating program development and delivery across the entire region, the partners can produce workforce solutions at the speed, efficiency, and scale not previously possible while working independently.

The Virginia Ship Repair Foundation has worked jointly with longtime partners to host a series of in-person Ship Repair Hiring Events across Hampton Roads this summer, including a June 4 event at Hampton High School and a July 24 event at Military Circle Mall.

The July General Membership Luncheon meeting was held at the Portsmouth Renaissance hotel on Tuesday, July 20th, 2021. The guest speaker was Rear Admiral (RADM) Brendan McLane, who is Commander of Naval Surface Force Atlantic.
