Rear Admiral James J. Shannon Speaks at the April Membership![]() RADM Shannon provided a brief historical account of the Navy’s Strategic Climate in Security as far back as the Civil War to the present. We are in a new era with the Global War on terror and we can’t follow the historical model for the future of how to build a navy and “You have to maintain to be prepared" he stated. The current CNO is focused on building our Navy today out 100 years moving forward and “Be Ready” is the guidance today. Which Ship Yard will win bragging rights to be called “THE YARD”?! Saturday June 15th VSRA, in partnership with FM 99, will be hosting the second annual “The Yard” Cardboard Boat Face Off competition at Hilton Garden in Suffolk. Teams representing the areas local ship yards build their own vessel out of corrugated cardboard and put them to the test on the water. The ships that stay afloat the longest, most closely resemble a Naval Vessel and have the highest amounts of exposed cardboard will score the highest. The event starts promptly at 10:00am and lasts until noon. In addition to contest there will be activates/games, a raffle and food so spectators and family members are welcome to attend.
