Assigned to work in the Labor Department to assist with gas freeing and other labor requirements. Also supplements other departments requiring manpower assistance to complete assigned task. 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities.
Duties and responsibilities
May perform gas free and/or labor duties, as well as property tending duties such as grass cutting, yard repair, weed elimination, trash pick up, snow shoveling, or water clean up. Receives instructions from supervisor or group leader.
Performs assigned labor jobs such as yard or office clean up, product repair and salvage reclaim (hand rework only), scrap disposal and stacking of empty pallets. Climbs in and out of tanks for cleaning purposes, or if qualified, fire watch for hot work being performed by tradesmen, pick up unused equipment and hoses, welding leads, etc., upon completion of jobs. Sets up air manifolds and blowers for ventilation requirements.
Works under the direction of department supervisor or group leader and receives job training from department supervisor.
Employees with previous training and experience as a forklift operator may sub for absent forklift operator may sub for absent forklift operator, if employee confirms previous work experience and the employee has a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
When a regular vacancy occurs in higher labor grades, supervisors may draw from employees in the labor pool who have shown adaptability to their work and successful job performance.
May be assigned to any unskilled job at the shipyard.
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.
Required Education and Experience
High school degree or equivalent.
Preferred Education or Experience
Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.
Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.
