Job Description A Lead person’s primary duties consist of supervising a group of employees on an assigned job. Ensures that workers accomplish required job assignments. Maintains employee time and certification records. Ensures that yard safety rules and regulations are carried out. Carries out other duties as assigned by the Shop Foreperson for the following shops. Outside Machine Shop Duties and responsibilities (Duties and responsibilities, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Responsible to check with the superintendent in charge of the job to get the scope of the work on a daily basis. Be able to interpret drawings, specifications with regard to the job, order materials, and write reports to generate new work. Inspect all areas of the job for hazards and unsafe conditions; coordinate with the fire watch supervisor and fire watches to ensure it is safe in the areas where hot work is to be performed. Ensure that all safety rules are followed and all unsafe conditions are reported to the Safety Department. Prepare a written report of all incidents including injuries that occur on the job. Assists other trades when required; works closely with regulatory bodies and gives a proper turnover to his/her relief. Ensures work areas are secure upon completion of assigned shift. Recognize and communicate any problems. Supervise crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride. Suggest and initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, hires and training requirements. Communicate regularly about repair and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic Knowledge of planning, allocate resources, manage production and coordinate people and equipment. Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in shipbuilding, specific to his/ her department. Time management, active listening, oral and written expression and comprehension, critical thinking and reasoning skills. The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. Strong mathematical abilities and the ability to remember words, numbers and other information. Should have a basic understanding of blueprints, surveys and job specifications. A minimum of two to four years of related skill, knowledge or experience is needed for these occupations. Must include related on-the-job training and experience in shipbuilding. Work Environment Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration. The work environment may be loud. This role may use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position. Travel Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected. Required Education and Experience High school degree or equivalent. Preferred Education or Experience Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting. An outside machinist installs and repairs equipment, sets up and handles manufacturing machinery and ensures that production equipment is adequate and functional. The machinist also operates machines manually or through control mechanisms, inspects equipment and materials and communicates with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.

An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:
- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling
- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders
- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration
- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines
- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines
- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery
Education
Most outside machinist careers require a high school diploma, as well as training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree.

Outside machinists usually need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be available.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is typically required. Outside Machinists generally have a broad background in diesel repair and maintenance.
