1st Class Crane Operator

Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Rigging Department. We are pleased to accept resumes for 1st Class Crane Operator for ALL SHIFTS.  This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA. Responsibilities: Operate hydraulic and friction cranes in a safe and efficient manner Operates traveling or stationary overhead crane to lift, move, and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hoisting attachments, such as hook, sling or bucket Hold employees in the basket to conduct ship repair Observes load hookup and determines safety of load Manipulates or depresses crane controls, such as pedals, levers, and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbla, and signal instructions Inspects crane for defective parts and notifies supervisor of defects or malfunctions Review daily work and delivery schedules to determine orders, sequences of deliveries, and special loading instructions Determine the weights and check them against lifiting capacities in order to prevent overload Using hand and arm signals for installing, handling, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.  Board ships via stairs, ladders, and gangways with tool bags and needed equipment  Understand and act upon instruction Will be required to wear personal protective equipment - hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator, hearing protection, personal floatation device Work independently to complete responsibilities Must have reqular, reliable attendance Control cost in assigned area of responsibility Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates. Qualifications: Minimum 5 years' experience operating a crane Minimum 3-5 years' experience rigging.  Will be asked to rig as a secondary job as production demands dictate Must be willing/able to operate many varieties of cranes to include 60T mobiles, 15T electric-hoist wing walls, RT mobile cranes, and 20T track cranes Experience operating a 230T Manitowoc preferred Good depth perception No fear of heights NCCCO certification preferred Conventional friction rig operator Must be flexible to work 7 days a week, 12 hour days Position compensation is based on experience. Shipyard Riggers assemble and install rigging gear such as cables, ropes, pulleys and winches to lift, lower, move or position machinery, structural steel and other heavy objects. They use weight handling equipment such as fork trucks, cranes, wire ropes (all types), end fittings, slings, winches, chain falls, boat slings, boat davits, and horizontal and verticals pad-eyes. The experienced Rigger will normally be able to perform all the following tasks: examine objects to be moved, estimate their size, shape and weight and decide on the type of equipment necessary; erect a temporary jib or derrick if required, and install cables, pulleys and other tackle; choose or make slinging equipment and attach it to the load; erect cranes and mobile crane booms, increase the height of tower cranes by bolting component parts in place, and rigging cables; splice ropes and cables to make slings and tackle; erect structural steel for buildings under construction; erect panels used on facades; and inspect, maintain and repair equipment of trade.
Education
A career as a rigger typically requires a high school diploma, and anywhere from a few months to one year of experience working with the required tools and skills, particularly in a marine environment. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
Qualifications
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is usually required.
