Rigger Apprentice

Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. established a formal Apprentice Program in 1986. Since then, many apprentices have graduated and pursued careers in the shipyard in their respective trades or management positions. Colonna’s Registered Apprenticeship Program combines classroom instruction and on the job training under the guidance of experienced craftspeople. In partnership with Tidewater Community College, over the course of four years, Apprentices will learn the technical skills needed to be successful within their respective trade and enjoy a fulfilling career in the Ship Repair industry. Apprentices are employed fulltime, attend classes in the evening and earn a competitive wage while advancing to the journeyman level based on skill, performance, attendance, and grades. Upon graduation, Apprentices will also earn a portable, nationally recognized credential from the Department of Labor. A Rigger is a person who specializes in the lifting and moving of extremely large or heavy objects, often with the assistance of a crane, derrick or chain hoists (chain fall). As an Apprentice, you may learn the following rigging work responsibilities: • Hooking cranes • Scaffolding • Rigging gear and equipment • The use of Anchor Chains • Underwater hull rigging • Handling of heavy equipment • Quality assurance • Safety QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED 18 years of age or older High school diploma or G.E.D Must test into college ready Math and English courses via the Tidewater Community College Virginia Placement Test Demonstrate a reasonable degree of mechanical, math, and verbal aptitude Must pass pre-employment to include a physical and drug test by company physician Physically able to perform the essential duties of the trade requested or assigned You must include one of the following with your application Uploaded copy of the Virginia Placement Test Scores from a Virginia Community College for both math and English. The scores must meet or exceed the following: English: eligible to enroll in ENF3 or ENG 111 Math: eligible to enroll in MTH 111 (pass sections MTE 1, MTE 2, MTE 3) For information on how to take the placement tests, visit: https://www.tcc.edu/admission/placement-testing Documentation from a Virginia Community College verifying student is exempt from placement tests due to Multiple Measures. Document must show which math and English the student is eligible to be enrolled in. Copy of an official/unofficial transcript from a community college or 4-year college/university verifying student was enrolled in a college level math and English course. Position compensation is discussed during the interview.
