HII Defense Federal Solutions is currently seeking a Specification Writer to develop procedures used for the operation of equipment, systems, and overall submarine operations; and manuals for qualification and training on the equipment and systems aboard modern nuclear submarines. This position will be located in our NetCenter office in Hampton, VA. As new or modernized systems are installed aboard submarines, the selected candidate will examine the technical documentation (drawings, specification sheets, etc.) and procedures (technical manuals, component procedures, etc.) supplied by various vendors and system/equipment design agencies to develop standardized procedures and manuals to be used by the sailors aboard the submarine and maintenance personnel maintaining and testing these systems. The Specification Writer will work with other writers, engineers, supply vendors, and the Navy to ensure the best information possible is made available to the submarine fleet. Additionally, the Specification Writer will help maintain the maintenance manual containing drawings and repair, inspection, and testing procedures for over 3,500 different valves used on today's submarines. #LI-AK1

Essential Job Responsibilities
•Prepares specifications from engineering change notices, customer specifications, and/or published data sheets.
•Maintains customer specifications files; reviews customer drawings and data; translates customer language into standard procedures and product flow.
What You Must Have
•High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 years additional education and/or related experience.
•Operational experience in shipboard or industrial electronics systems or naval nuclear propulsion training and operational experience.
•Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe.
•Must be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential security clearance.
•Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Bonus Points For...
•Shipboard (preferably submarine) training and operational experience in combat systems, sonar, radio, and/or navigation electronics; or naval nuclear propulsion training and operational experience.
Job performance may require working in an industrial or shipboard environment. Must be capable of climbing ladders, and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.

The primary role of the Technical Writer is to produce quality project reports through writing, editing, composition, and format preparation of large amounts of complex data to achieve clear and readable technical reports. These reports are typically generated during field operations or in support of engineering tasks. The writing of operational reports shall be proactive as the operation is performed. The technical writer will create drawings, capture and arrange photographs, generate QA forms, and perform numerous other duties.
• An Associate degree in a discipline associated with technical report generation from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of five years of experience in technical report preparation. Three years of this experience shall be with salvage, diving, ocean engineering, or related matters. Two additional years of experience may be substituted for the educational requirement.
• Excellent communications skills.
• Skilled in the use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Must be able to obtain authorization to operate company vehicles.
• Must be able to obtain a U.S. Government clearance.
• Work is normally performed in a typical office/warehouse work environment but may be performed in an off shore environment.
• Limited to moderate physical effort required.
• Limited to moderate exposure to physical risk.
• Must be able and willing, to travel worldwide, on short notice for indefinite periods of time.
