Journeyman Fabrication Shop Welder (Mastertradesperson 3) - 5543 Location: Chesapeake, VA, US, 23320 Company: HII's TSD Requisition Number: 5543 Required Travel: 11 - 25% Employment Type: Full Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt Hours Per Week: 40 Security Clearance: Ability to Obtain Level of Experience: Mid Employee Referral Bonus Amount: ERP Amount: $1,000 Summary This position will primarily work out of our Woodlake Fabrication Shop location in Chesapeake, VA but will also travel locally to shipyards and military bases supporting the Marine Services Operation in fabrication and fleet modernization. Position reports directly to the fabrication shop supervisor and fabrication manager. With the understanding that this is a working hands on position and also tasking may require out of town travel for short durations up to 25% of the time. This is depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set. Working extended weekend and/or evening hours to complete task to meet deadline may be required occasionally, as this position will be required to handle a high volume of work with short or last minute deadlines. *Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment. What you will do - Applies appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weld-able materials. - Works from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts or work orders. - Lays out and marks points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates. - Positions pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools. - May inspect completed work for conformance to specifications. - Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced welders. - May serve as a team leader. Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. - Participates in special projects as required. What you must have - Must have High School education/equivalent, and 4 years of related experience. - Must have welding experience with stick (SMAW) process. - Must be able to work from blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction. - Must be able to follow safety procedures. - Must have a ability to problem solve and communicate those ideas to supervisor. - Must be able to work as a part of a team leading and/or assisting as required and have good communication skills. - Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD confidential security clearance, and maintain clearance level throughout employment. - Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date, and maintain credentials throughout employment. Preferred: Bonus points for... - Candidate with experience/knowledge in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and/or flux cored arc welding (FCAW) welding processes/positions preferred - Candidate with current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248 preferred. - Candidate with shipboard experience highly desired. - Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program are preferred. - Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification preferred. - Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
