Summary of duties – Welder I, under supervision, applies appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials for production. Lays out and marks position pieces on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates. Fits by hand or position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides, and steps using measuring instruments and / or hand tools. May perform fitting, welding, and silver brazing on shipboard piping systems on all types of metals. Must possess knowledge and experience in the set up and operation of machines and tools to include: mig welder, tig welder, plasma arc cutter, gas cutter, carbon arc cutter, bandsaw, drill press etc. to cut and weld parts to specifications. Uses hand tools such as grinders, needle guns, clamps, fixtures, calipers, scribes, combination squares etc. Basic knowledge of weld theory to include the following processes: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and / or Silver Brazing. Some basic knowledge of ferrous / non- ferrous metals and the ability to read / interpret blueprints required. May be assigned the duties and responsibilities of other positions for which qualifications are met. Periodically required to lift/move equipment up to and including 50 pounds.
Specific description of duties –
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample part, with supervision, to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
- Fits and assembles parts into complete assemblies
- Verifies dimensions and alignment of assemblies
- Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Welds foundations, brackets, studs, platforms, piping, and other items to support on-site installations
- Maintains cleanliness of the work area
- Overtime is routinely required but not guaranteed
- Travel outside the local area may be required
- Perform any other assignments or tasks as needed or requested by management to assist in accomplishing the organization’s mission, objectives and goals.
Education / Specialized training –
- HS diploma or GED may be required depending on varying contract stipulations
- Apprenticeship or Welding trade school with six months practical experience or one year of practical relatable experience
Security Clearance –
- US Citizenship required
- Clearance up to secret level may be required.
Certification / Licenses (as required for the task being performed)
- Certificate documentation required for listed education
- Fire watch certification
Physical/Environmental Job Requirements –
Physical requirements for the job may include the following:
- Lifting/moving up to and including 50 pounds
- Routinely climbing several flights of stairs
- Performing tasks in confined spaces
Our work is primarily onboard naval vessels that may include variables of physical activity, i.e. stooping, climbing, walking, etc.
In performing these duties, you may be required to work outdoors. You will experience temperature variations, extremely loud noises and other physical hazards.
