Rigger

Responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications, safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Minimum 2 years shipyard rigging experience and able to conduct operations with little to no supervision Must be able to adhere and understand the company’s safety policies as well as industrial safety requirements and have knowledge of OSHA standards. Fabricates, installs and repairs rigging and weight handling gear on ships. Attaches hoists and pulling gear to lift, move, remove, install, or position machinery, equipment, structural parts, and order heavy loads aboard ships. Selects and attaches chain falls, jacks, rollers, levers and/or pulleys according to types of loads being moved. Signals cranes or other equipment to move loads; Have the advanced knowledge of crane signals and terminologies; Ability to communicate with crane operators via hand signals or voice radios Controls movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or in confined spaces. Lays out and handles lines on cleats or bollards and hauls in ships with capstans when assisting dock master in ship dry docking operations. Installs or repairs ships’ rigging such as mast on antenna wires, small boat handling gear, shipboard cranes, winches, windless, replenishment and weight handling equipment. Works in engine rooms, boiler rooms, aloft or in confined spaces as required. Thorough knowledge of shackles, natural, synthetic and wire ropes, steamboat jacks, hydraulic jacks, turnbuckles, rollers, chain falls, clamps, swivels, crane signals, shipboard nomenclature, forklifts, and aerial lifts. Splice natural and synthetic ropes, tying knots, use of electric, pneumatic and hand powered tools. Have the advanced knowledge in proper inspection, use and storage of wire rope pennants and slings Have the ability to determine the load weight and center gravity when rigging equipment Ability determining the correct rigging equipment for the current task Possess the knowledge of using complex multipoint suspension techniques to maneuver loads and move objects from ground level to heights of 50ft to 150ft+ Possess the knowledge of knot tying with the capabilities of tying knots and knowing their uses and functionalities such as bowlines, square knots, and hitches, etc. Ability to estimate the weight needed to accomplish weight test for different types of ships equipment

Shipyard Riggers assemble and install rigging gear such as cables, ropes, pulleys and winches to lift, lower, move or position machinery, structural steel and other heavy objects. They use weight handling equipment such as fork trucks, cranes, wire ropes (all types), end fittings, slings, winches, chain falls, boat slings, boat davits, and horizontal and verticals pad-eyes. The experienced Rigger will normally be able to perform all the following tasks: examine objects to be moved, estimate their size, shape and weight and decide on the type of equipment necessary; erect a temporary jib or derrick if required, and install cables, pulleys and other tackle; choose or make slinging equipment and attach it to the load; erect cranes and mobile crane booms, increase the height of tower cranes by bolting component parts in place, and rigging cables; splice ropes and cables to make slings and tackle; erect structural steel for buildings under construction; erect panels used on facades; and inspect, maintain and repair equipment of trade.
Education
A career as a rigger typically requires a high school diploma, and anywhere from a few months to one year of experience working with the required tools and skills, particularly in a marine environment. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
