Alignment Technician

Position Title: Alignment Technician Work Location: Chesapeake, VA FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt REQ#23_020603 Summary of duties – The Alignment Technician conducts alignments of various combat systems elements and acts as Subject Matter Expert in the field. Candidate will interpret drawings, sketches, CSAM, and other technical work documents to determine work scope, and accomplish CSA utilizing precision leveling equipment, jigs/fixtures and related equipment. Candidate conducts CSA with little to no supervision, provides on-the-job training to Journeymen and Apprentices, and is able to perform CSA task from inception to completion as subject matter expert. Specific description of duties: Conduct various types of Combat Systems Alignments, including foundation installations, roller path inclinations, train & elevation, and benchmark sighting on all applicable classes of surface ships. Conduct alignments for one-, two-, three-, and four-axis elements, including guns, directors, launchers, gyros and various other fixed elements throughout the ship. Review upcoming Combat Systems Alignment work scopes to create alignment plan, choose proper equipment, and rectify any issues prior to commencement. Conduct CSA tasks with little to no supervision. Conduct on-the-job training for Apprentices and Journeyman techs. Ability to read and understand CSAMs. Conduct pre-job brief with alignment team and fabrication support team. Set-up and operate alignment equipment, including theodolites, clinometers and other alignment equipment. Evaluate readings, compare to tolerances, and provide correction instructions to fabricators to ensure alignment of element is within tolerance. Set, align and direct control welding of critical ordnance, machinery foundations, and new/refurbished deck/platform sections. Set and level milling machines for in-place machining. Evaluate final alignment results and prepare reports. Assist with training, training development, and procedure development. Works inside or outside, specifically on the mast of ships, in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Incumbent is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as hard hats and steel-toed shoes. Incumbent often stands on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Work involves bending, stooping, and working in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Possession of an active State Driver’s License is required Travel CONUS and OCONUS as needed. Overtime may be required but not guaranteed. Occasional travel outside the local area may be required. Perform any other assignments or tasks as needed or requested by management to assist in accomplishing the organization’s mission, objectives and goals. Education/Specialized Training: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Five (5) years of experience in the Alignment field, as a current Journeyman or Senior Technician. Basic knowledge of ship construction/repair process and drawing interpretation. Must be familiar with SW225-A0-MMA-010/ALIGNTHEORY. Ability to work independently and with others. Knowledge of basic equipment maintenance and operations. Ability to coordinate logistical efforts across multiple stakeholders. Computer skills using Microsoft Office, Power Point and Excel. Security Clearance: Secret Clearance required. U.S. Citizenship required. Physical/Environmental Job Requirements: • Lifting/moving up to and including 50 pounds • Routinely climbing several flights of stairs • Performing tasks in confined spaces Our work is primarily onboard naval vessels that may include variables of physical activity, i.e. stooping, climbing, walking, etc. In performing these duties, you may be required to work outdoors. You will experience temperature variations, extremely loud noises and other physical hazards.
