COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DIRECTOR

Overview:

The Virginia Ship Repair Association is seeking a COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DIRECTOR to oversee execution of the organization’s communications, branding, and marketing strategy to ensure the workforce needs of the Association’s ship repair and shipbuilding members are met.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Develop and execute strategies for increasing general awareness of the Virginia Ship Repair Association, Virginia Ship Repair Foundation, and ship repair industry.
  • Maintain strong partnerships and strategic relationships across the Hampton Roads region with educational, community, and governmental organizations at all levels – including regional school systems, community colleges, and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council – in support of the ship repair industry.
  • Assist the VSRA President with development of briefings, white papers, presentations, and other materials that communicate the mission and goals of the organization for educational institutions, community organizations and governmental officials.
  • Maintain relationships with marketing and media partners to enhance the branding and image of the Association and Foundation and execute strategies to promote the ship repair industry and skilled trades careers.
  • Assist with marketing and presentations for workforce development & recruitment events, such as shipyard tours, industry days, career expositions, and identify additional opportunities / events for participation to increase awareness of the ship repair industry.
  • Generate income for the Association and Foundation through development of comprehensive sponsorship packages for events and initiatives and assist with securing event sponsors.
  • Manage all Association & Foundation social media accounts, while determining methods to improve the effectiveness and impact of use of these platforms.
  • Develop and improve online resources for the emerging and underemployed workforce such as the job board, occupational guide, and technical school directory.
  • Maintain accuracy and relevancy of the VSRA website, including regularly monitoring and reporting metrics such as Google Analytics.
  • Organize / manage media contacts and draft relevant, timely press releases in alignment with Association & Foundation media strategies.
  • Identify significant media opportunities that can be leveraged to support the Association’s and Foundation’s strategic plans. 

Location:

  • This is an in-office position located in downtown Norfolk, VA.
  • Frequent regional travel to events may be required. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to function highly in a fast-paced, team-focused environment while eagerly serving in support of a dedicated Association Membership.
  • Desire to interact with the Association Membership, Community partners, general public (including students, teachers, community leaders, and so forth) and government officials at all levels while enthusiastically promoting the Association, Foundation, and Ship Repair industry as a whole.
  • Proficiency with outreach tools such as graphic design, website design, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.).
  • Proficiency with program implementation, improvement, and planning.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain partnerships and industry relationships.
  • Ability to research, compile, and summarize information.
  • Ability to take direction, develop plans, and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new software, website interfaces, and tasks as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with copy editing & professional writing.
  • Working knowledge of the Ship Repair Industry.
  • Proficiency in various Adobe programs, including Acrobat Reader, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Captivate.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in creating and developing power point slides for presentation to enhance industry awareness at the local, state, and federal levels.
