HII Unmanned Systems is seeking an experienced candidate to come join our team! The position will be in Hampton, VA at our Center of Excellence. The Center of Excellence is a new state of the art facility with plenty of room to grow!
As our new Outside Machinist Foreman you must have and will be responsible for the following:
- Must have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, structure, and repair manuals as well as understand symbols, flags, and general notes.
Must have experience working with precision measuring instruments, micrometers, calipers, tape measures and standard scales.
- Supervises lay-outs, fabrication, and assembly a variety of standard and nonstandard major jigs, fixtures, tool masters, master tooling gauges and related tooling involving compound angles and complex contours where the establishment and coordination to exacting tolerances of numerous tooling holes and reference points between several planes are required.
- Prior aviation structural assembly and maintenance experience with metallic, composite structures and aviation fastening systems is a plus.
- Prepares operational sequences and shop drawings covering parts fabrication and assembly to be. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical processes or other control procedures.
What you will be doing...
Supervises, assigns, coordinates and evaluates semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel according to their skill, experience and job knowledge. Supervises and trains employees to improve quality and quantity of work performed. Recommends training to enhance skill and productivity of employees, and assists in development of training procedures. Breaks broad strategies down to practical action plans and ensures employees are trained to perform these plans. Responsible for complying with all technical aspects of the job including adherence to all drawings, procedures, etc. Responsible for manufacturing, installation, operation, testing, and process operations that have a significant financial impact on the company's performance. Supervises qualified trades staff; monitoring job and budget performance for all shifts.
What we are looking for...
An incumbent must possess a thorough technical knowledge of the trade in the area of responsibility, and a have a solid educational base, generally gained through successful completion of the Apprentice program or the equivalent in education and training. A candidate without an Apprentice Certificate or equivalent should have a minimum of 6 years trade experience, preferably with some exposure to production planning and support functions. The candidate must be able to supervise the work of others, motivate and train employees, and possess strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Depending on assigned area, specific technical, medical and physical requirements may apply
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a government clearance.
Bonus points for...
- Familiar with cutting, fit-up, drilling and bonding of composite materials and titanium.
- Ability to maintain an aviation level Tool Control and FOD Prevention program.
- Position will supervise technicians utilizing tools to include but not limited to torque wrenches, air drills, right angle drills, microstop cages, saws, sanders and more specialty Aircraft tools and equipment.
Physical Requirements
May require working in an industrial or shipboard environment. Normally not required to lift more than 40 pounds higher than three feet above feet/floor level. May encounter extremes of temperature, pollution, humidity, noise, and other environmental factors while collecting data, observing performance of task teams.

An outside machinist installs and repairs equipment, sets up and handles manufacturing machinery and ensures that production equipment is adequate and functional. The machinist also operates machines manually or through control mechanisms, inspects equipment and materials and communicates with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.
An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:
- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling
- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders
- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration
- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines
- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines
- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery
Education
Most outside machinist careers require a high school diploma, as well as training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree.
Outside machinists usually need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be available.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is typically required. Outside Machinists generally have a broad background in diesel repair and maintenance.
