Paint Quality Control Supervisor (PCI, BCI, or Nace Cert)

MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Ensure that we are using qualified personnel for QC. 2. Ensure that proper inspection forms and recording procedures are used for job quality monitoring (QC) 3. Ensure correct and properly operating and calibrated equipment is used. 4. Review and sign off on DIRs on a timely basis (QCS must sign off or authorize review of DIR's by other competent QC personnel). 5. Ensure that work is inspected for conformance with contract requirements, good painting practice, and internal QC procedures. 6. Develop and/or review Inspection and Test Plans. 7. Conduct and/or review Internal Audits. 8. Oversee company Corrective Action Program (e.g. respond to external CARs, issue internal CARs, document corrective action of QMS failures for management review.) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Must have successfully completed the SSPC QCS course or equivalent training or grandfathering accepted by the Certification Manager. 3. Must have achieved and maintained (at a minimum) SSPC PCI Level 2 or BCI Level 2 or NACE CIP Level 2 Inspector Certification or equivalent third party certification approved by the SSPC Certification Manager. 4. At least three years of full-time field experience in Industrial/Marine Coatings field and hold valid certifications and licenses where required. 5. Must have the ability to carry out written or oral instructions and have analytical skills to resolve issues. 6. Must be able to operate all abrasive blast systems spray pumps, spray booth, shop overhead crane, air compressor, fork lifts, man lifts boom type and scissor and all Quality instruments that are required for proper coating inspections (i.e. Dry Film Thickness Gage (DFT), Environment Gages, Light and Wind Speed Gages, Profile Gages (spring anvil micrometers), Conductivity Gages, and instruments to measure PH, Pit ages, and son on). 7. Marine Painters are skilled in the craft of covering various vessel surfaces, both interior and exterior, with protective coatings using brushes, spray guns, and rollers. Many kinds of paints/coatings are used as protection of steel, wood, fiberglass, and other surfaces from rust and corrosion, and protection of the underwater portion of vessels against the attachment of marine life. Painters must know the proper surface preparations, the best coating to use for each purpose and the accepted application techniques to obtain the desired results.

A Marine painter's typical duties include:
- Preparing the surface (by sanding, blasting, cleaning, etc.)
- Removing old coatings using chemicals
- Applying primers and finish coats
- Providing quality wood finishing
- Tinting paints
- Spray painting (indoors and outdoors)
- Sign work ( such as cutting stencils, hand lettering, silk screen lettering, etc.)
- Poster work (design and lay out)
- Graining, marbling, and flocking
- Gold and aluminum leaf application
- Estimating the quantity and type of coating needed, and the required amount of labor for each task

Marine Painters must also be familiar with, and trained in, the proper use of respiratory protection equipment such as respirators and other breathing devices.
Education
Typically, Marine Painting careers require a high school diploma.
Qualifications
Typically, the ideal Marine Painting candidate will posses:
- Previous job experience, particularly in a maritime setting
- Basic trade knowledge, such as the use of job related tools and equipment
- A strong work ethic (flexible, reliable, and punctual)
