Marine Mechanic

  1. Basic Purpose and Function:

 This hands-on job involves installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and equipment.  Work is performed in the shop and (primarily) on-board customer vessels.

     2. Skills and Qualifications:

  • Awareness of engine design and operation.
  • Awareness of marine applications and propulsion systems.
  • Ability to perform mechanical maintenance and repairs as directed.
  • Awareness of electrical/electronic systems maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to perform engine/component tests and record measurements.
  • Ability to travel frequently (>50%) domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to work on seaborn vessels and in uncomfortable working environments for extended hours.
  • Regularly required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 85 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) internally and externally.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and other related PC functions and programs.
  • Ability to comprehend technical drawings and specifications.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to perform under duress from strict deadlines with limited resources.
  • Maintains an active state-issued driver’s license.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally allowed to work in the United States.
  • Maintains personal supply of mechanical hand tools per FMSNA required tool inventory (to be provided before employment).

     3. Education, Certifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as an engine mechanic or comparable role is required.

     4. Major Responsibilities (Functions/Duties):

  • Assists with installing, maintaining, repairing, and overhauling marine diesel engines and related equipment. 
  • Produces written and electronic reports containing inspection data, measurements, failure information, and other job-related results.
  • Performs tasks prescribed by work package procedure, schedule, and quality standards according to the project statement of work.
  • Compliance with all FMSNA policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Responsible for the proper use, maintenance, and cleanliness of company and customer-furnished equipment and facilities.
  • Acts as a professional representative of FMSNA, particularly when interacting and communicating with customers and industry counterparts.
  • Accountable for timely and accurate expense management, including labor charging and material usage.
  • Performs other duties as directed by management.
