Commercial Estimator

Duties and responsibilities

1. Extracts estimating data using bid specifications and applicable references. Performs ship checks, estimates man-hours, material requirements, solicits subcontractor quotes, prepares bid for final review, and submits proposals.

2. Tracks and manages projects transaction such as margins, milestones and invoicing and effectively presents this information to upper management and customers when applicable.

3. Support the Chief Estimator with training the Junior Estimator.

4. Attends bid openings, prepares pre-award information meetings, holds pre-production meetings and prepares requisitions for subcontractors.

5. Provides input to contracts to negotiate for additional funding, reviews end proposed figures and compares them with estimated figures.

6. Holds job completion meetings and discusses with production as to how job progressed

7. Organizes and files all documents for future reference.

20. Strong computer skills with emphasis on Excel spreadsheet, Outlook, and word processing applications. Experience with MS Project/P3 is considered a plus.

21. Possess a valid driver's license and operate a motor vehicle with satisfactory driving records.

22. Ability to acquire a DBIDS.

Work Environment

Work is equally performed in an office environment and outside weather conditions, which may include rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to humid conditions and to vibration.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Occasionally the work environment may be loud.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

 

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

1. Apprenticeship, Journeyman or bachelor’s degree – preferred but not required.

2. 5+ years of experience in the ship repair industry.

3. Ability to understand technical documents and references.

 

Preferred Education or Experience

Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity requirements.
