Position Overview

The Refrigeration Technician will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of shipboard air conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R) systems. This technician will serve as a critical member of the engineering support team, ensuring all HVAC and refrigeration equipment is functioning efficiently, safely, and in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.

Supervision Requirements

The Refrigeration Technician must have a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in shipboard air conditioning and refrigeration systems, gained through:

  • Commercial or military maritime service involving AC&R systems, or
  • Equivalent shore-based experience maintaining marine-grade HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on shipboard air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair faults in chillers, compressors, condensers, evaporators, and control systems.
  • Monitor system performance and ensure proper operation according to specifications.
  • Maintain accurate logs, service records, and maintenance documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA regulations and other environmental and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with shipboard personnel and other technicians to plan and execute maintenance activities with minimal disruption.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to system reliability and performance.
  • Safely handle refrigerants and ensure compliance with handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
  • Support shipboard inspections and surveys as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working with shipboard air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Strong knowledge of AC&R system components, including compressors, motors, control valves, and thermostats.
  • Familiarity with EPA 608 refrigerant handling regulations and best practices.
  • Experience with both direct expansion and chilled water systems preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, manuals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass background checks and obtain security clearance if required.
  • Must be physically capable of entering confined or elevated shipboard spaces and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Type II or Universal) is required.
  • Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 50lbs in weight.

While performing these job duties, the employee is routinely required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; use fingers and hands to type or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
