Facilities Mechanic 1st Class

Summary:

The Facilities Mechanic III is responsible for overseeing and administering a comprehensive maintenance and repair program for heavy machinery, mechanical systems, and support equipment used in ship construction, ship repair, and the manufacturing of shipboard systems. This position ensures maximum equipment uptime, coordinates preventive maintenance schedules, and provides hands-on support for complex mechanical troubleshooting, repair, and modification activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance programs for heavy industrial equipment, including cranes, welding machines, hydraulic systems, compressors, HVAC systems, and production machinery.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems used in shipbuilding and systems manufacturing operations.
  • Maintain service records and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and equipment standards.
  • Work with Facilities and Production teams to prioritize repairs and schedule maintenance activities with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior mechanics and maintenance personnel.
  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors to procure parts, schedule specialized repairs, or support facility upgrades.
  • Assist with facilities inspections and capital improvement planning related to equipment lifecycle and infrastructure needs.
  • Monitor maintenance KPIs and recommend strategies to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Ensure all work is completed in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company safety policies.

Qualifications & Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in industrial maintenance, mechanics, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in facilities or industrial maintenance, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role.
  • Experience in administratively overseeing high visibility maintenance programs for critical equipment
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems including hydraulics, pneumatics, welding equipment, and heavy-duty production machinery.
  • Proficient in reading technical drawings, mechanical schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Experience working in shipbuilding, ship repair, or heavy manufacturing environments strongly preferred.
  • Skilled in the use of diagnostic tools, hand tools, and powered equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergencies and support after-hours maintenance if needed.

Physical Demands:

While performing these job duties, the employee is routinely required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; use fingers and hands to type or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.

Work Environment:

This position is performed in a traditional shipyard and manufacturing environment with local travel required between facilities.
