NSC Staffing is actively hiring Material Support Clerks for an upcoming project in Newport News, VA. This is a critical support role within shipyard operations, requiring strong physical endurance, safety awareness, and the ability to move, deliver, and organize materials across complex and demanding shipboard environments.
Position Overview:
As a Material Support Clerk, you will be responsible for handling, transporting, and organizing various materials—including pipe, valves, insulation, and fittings—throughout the shipyard and onboard vessels. You’ll work in coordination with trades, warehouse teams, and project leads to ensure materials are delivered accurately and efficiently to designated work areas, including confined spaces and elevated locations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lift, carry, and maneuver materials up to 50 lbs through shipyard environments and onboard vessels
• Deliver materials into open areas, confined spaces, and at extreme heights aboard ships
• Walk, bend, squat, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift)
• Follow delivery schedules, material requests, and safety procedures
• Maintain accurate records of material movement and assist with inventory tracking
• Support site cleanliness and assist with general labor duties as needed
• Operate forklifts and other handling equipment upon certification
• Follow all safety and PPE protocols strictly
Skills & Qualifications:
• Ability to work in physically demanding environments (confined spaces, extreme heat/cold, elevated platforms)
• Must be dependable, energetic, and safety-focused
• Basic reading, writing, and math skills required
• Good communication and customer service mindset when interacting with trades and supervisors
• Familiarity with basic warehouse or material picking systems is a plus
• Experience in marine, shipyard, or industrial environments is preferred
Required Safety Training / Certifications:
All candidates must have the following completed prior to assignment and provide documentation on NSC Staffing letterhead:
- Confined Space Training (OSHA 29 CFR 1915 Subpart B)
- Hazard Communication Training (OSHA 29 CFR 1915.1200 / 1910.1200)
- Respirator Qualification including medical clearance and training (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134)
- Must be trained to use the MSA Comfo Classic respirator
 
- Forklift Training (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178) — Evaluation will be conducted prior to operation
- Fall Protection Training including harness, lifelines, and beam clamp use (OSHA 29 CFR 1915.159, etc.)
- PPE Training per OSHA 29 CFR 1915 Subpart I and Hearing Conservation 1910.95
- Safety Glasses must be approved per NSC Staffing’s eyewear selection chart
- Hard Hat must be white with the NSC Staffing company name on the front
- Hearing Protection must be muff-style (banded or mounted), with proof of training
- Audiometric Testing with signed results and verbal explanation as per OSHA 1910.95(g)(3)
Note: All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be provided by NSC Staffing and must comply with OSHA and ANSI standards.
Work Environment:
You will be working aboard ships, in shipyards, and in industrial environments. Work includes climbing ladders, maneuvering in confined spaces, and operating in extreme heat, humidity, or noise. Proper PPE and training will be provided for all environments.

Performs a combination of manual and clerical shipping and/or receiving duties which may require the use of hand trucks, forklifts, and other devices, as well as computers to maintain data. Receives incoming materials or prepares materials for shipment. Verifies quantity, weight, and conformance of materials; prepares records of materials shipped and bills of lading; routes materials to destinations. May lay out, fabricate, and assemble nonstandard shipping crates and boxes, and prepare parts and tooling for special shipment.
Ability to lift forty pounds, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes and work in high heat/cold environments, aboard ships, under industrial conditions, in confined spaces, at heights, and in extreme weather. Ability to operate portable power tools. Work may involve climbing and working on ladders.
