Purpose:
 
Colonna’s Shipyard is seeking a 2nd Class Barge Services Mechanic. As a Barge Services Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing advanced mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation tasks on a variety of barge systems and equipment at our project site. This role requires extensive mechanical knowledge, precision, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team to ensure the reliable operation of barge services and equipment.
 
The position is located at the project site in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations.
 
Position will work 8 hours shifts Monday-Friday and 4 hour shifts Saturday-Sunday. Must be available to work all holidays and be on call 24/7.
 
Job Description:
 
Key responsibilities include: 
  • Perform routine and complex maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical systems and other shipboard equipment, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
  • Install, align, and secure mechanical systems and components in accordance with technical specifications and blueprints.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues promptly, using diagnostic tools and technical expertise to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Execute upgrades and modifications to mechanical systems to enhance performance, efficiency, and safety.
  • Perform precision fitting and calibration of mechanical components to meet strict tolerances and specifications.
  • Accurately read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to guide installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Utilize a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to perform mechanical tasks with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and installations, including materials used, time spent, and any modifications made to systems.
  • Collaborate with other tradespeople and departments to complete projects within specified timelines.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities successfully.
  • Mentor department employees and other assigned crew members, providing support and training as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience as a barge mechanic; or have graduated from a registered apprenticeship program relevant to the trade.
  • Must have demonstrated a strong understanding of mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation. Strong understanding of barge mechanical systems and components.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the operation and repair of all barge systems including, but not limited to, mechanical, plumbing, communication, electrical, CHT,
    air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Must be able to lift heavy materials, work in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be have on call availability 24/7.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Previous technical training highly preferred.
  • Relevant certifications and experience with brazing and tack welding preferred.
Security Requirements:
  • Position requires you to gain and maintain access to government and military installations, often requiring completion of stringent background checks and screenings.
  • May require the ability to obtain and maintain appropriate level of security clearance depending on the contract.
  • Must be able to provide proper documentation as needed to process access/clearance (e.g. birth certificate, identification card, etc.).
Travel Requirements:
  • Frequent Travel; 50% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
