Fire Watch Specialist
Type: Full-Time
Pay Range: $19.00 – $22.00 per hour, based on experience and performance.

Position Summary:
The Fire Watch Specialist ensures the safe execution of hot work operations by providing vigilant fire watch coverage during work and cooldown periods. While the primary focus is fire watch, the role may include supporting setup and cleanup around hot work as needed. This is a position ideal for someone committed to safety, reliability, and leadership in the ship repair environment.

This position requires maintaining a high level of focus and attention during routine or repetitive conditions. Candidates must be able to stay engaged and uphold safety standards at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain constant fire watch during all hot work and required cooldown periods
  • Monitor work areas for fire hazards and unsafe conditions; enforce immediate corrective action
  • Support setup and cleanup of fire protection equipment and barriers when not actively on fire watch
  • Communicate clearly with PAI, production, and safety personnel regarding hot work status
  • Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are observed and notify supervision
  • Complete all fire watch documentation accurately and maintain records
  • Lead by example and mentor others in safe work practices

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to procedures
  • Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic
  • Leadership potential and ability to enforce safe work practices
  • Experience in industrial, ship repair, or NAVSEA environments preferred but not required
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolds, and work in confined spaces for extended periods
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Comfortable working at heights and around active hot work operations
  • Must wear required PPE for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations

Work Schedule & Hours:

  • Full-time position, averaging 48–56 hours per week, including some weekends
  • Extended hours may be required during critical operations
  • Flexibility and reliability are essential

The primary responsibility of a firewatch is to stand watch at an assigned location and identify and prevent any hazardous situations.

Typical Job Responsibilities include:
- Inspecting an area prior to any hot work being performed to ensure all flammable and combustible material have been removed
- Delivering all safety equipment (including appropriate fire extinguisher) to site
- Staying stationed in the work site such that they can respond quickly to prevent fires
- Conducting frequent inspections of the hot work areas during hot work to ensure area is still safe and working conditions are favorable
- Reporting fires and accidents to the officer of the deck and Firewatch Coordinator immediately
- Remaining in place for thirty minutes following work performed to clean area and to ensure work site conditions remain safe
Education
High School Diploma preferred. Must complete Fire Watch training.
Qualifications
A firewatch must:
- Have the ability to carry out written and/or oral instructions
- Successfully complete a Fire Watch Training course
- Be able to wear safety equipment provided (i.e. self-contained breathing apparatus)
- Be able to work effectively as part of a field crew
- Be a steady and reliable worker
- Previous work within the maritime industry and familiarity with maritime terminology preferred
- Knowledge of hot work procedures preferred
