Welder

The standards for this category are a high school diploma or its equivalent plus complete two years of training in an appropriate trade school, military service school or civilian college or 5-7 years of experience in the field of fabrication, and installation. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Applicant need to be able to joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other wieldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets specifications, drawings, blueprints, shop job orders, process sheets and assigns work to qualified shop personnel. Applicants must have a general understanding of NAVSEA Standards Items. May train new shop personnel on machinery, tools and test equipment required for quality construction of products. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Applicants Performs a variety of complicated tasks. Use a variety of ARC and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products such as foundations, cable collars, cable/pipe/vent hangers, cable tubes penetrations, studs, etc. May lead and direct the work of others. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Applicant must have 5-7 years of AIT Installation experience and be certified in the following process GMAW, SMAW, FCAW & TIG. May perform related task such as thermal cutting (PLASMA or TORCH) and grinding Applicants must have own tools of the trade. Applicants must be able to pass precertification company weld test. Working Conditions: Work is performed onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation and the like and with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death. Applicants must show proof of eligibility for the Rapidgate program and or hold a current secret security clearance. Applicant must be willing to travel to various work sites such as San Diego, CA, Everett WA, Pearl Harbor HI, Mayport FL & Yokosuka Japan. Applicant must be willing to work second or thirds shift as needed. Applicants also must be willing to work more than 40 hours work weeks. They must be willing to carry more than 50 lbs while climbing dry dock stairs and ladders to access ships in various shipyards.

Marine Welders are skilled laborers who use a variety of equipment and methods to permanently join together various metal parts. Marine Welders will typically perform manual welding procedures using Shielded Metal Arc welding (SMAW) or Oxy-Acetylene torches, or use semiautomatic systems such as wire feeder machines. Marine Welders must be able to set up and use this equipment in a variety of positions (such as flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead). Marine Welding methods include Arc, Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Submerged Arc, Carbon Arc, and Gas (Oxy-Acetylene). Certified Marine Welders must be able to perform pre- and post-heating, induction heating, surface hardening, stress relieving, and welding inspections. Skilled welders will also perform soldering and brazing operations. Standard metals that Marine Welders join together include all types of steels, aluminum, copper, monel, copper-nickel, bronzes, and cast iron. Each level of skilled Marine Welder (3rd, 2nd, 1st) will require Quality Assurance (QA) certifications.
