Outside Machinists

The Outside Machinist must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to perform job operation/tasks on conventional and nuclear ships and submarines. The Outside Machinist must be assignable to any work center excluding nuclear and subsafe machinery. The following is a list of typical work that an Outside Machinist might be asked to perform: a. Remove, repair, overhaul, install and align main propulsion machinery and associated equipment/components. Also remove, repair, overhaul, install and align equipment associated with auxiliary systems such as condensers, compressors, pumps, forced draft blowers, main feed pumps, various types of valves, cargo handling machinery, anchor handling gear, boat davits, cranes, elevators, conveyors, fire fighting equipment, machine shop equipment, galley, and laundry equipment. b. Install and repair foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of ship’s armament. c. Install, adjust, set, and repair or replaces various control/regulating or safety devices such as meters, gages, valves, governors and automatic alarms. Test or assist in testing of shipboard machinery pierside or on sea trials to prove satisfactory operation and acceptance. d. Use various portable and fixed machine tools such as boring bars, milling machines, facing machines and drill presses. Use precision measuring instruments such as height gages, depth gages, calipers, verniers, various types of micrometers, and assists in the use of optical equipment. e. Coordinate and arrange for the work of several trades in connection with performing work from information received from technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, written and/or oral instructions. An outside machinist installs and repairs equipment, sets up and handles manufacturing machinery and ensures that production equipment is adequate and functional. The machinist also operates machines manually or through control mechanisms, inspects equipment and materials and communicates with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.

An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:
- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling
- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders
- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration
- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines
- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines
- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery
Education
Most outside machinist careers require a high school diploma, as well as training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree.

Outside machinists usually need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be available.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is typically required. Outside Machinists generally have a broad background in diesel repair and maintenance.
