Featured Article: Security Committee Update and Your DBIDS Questions Answered

Having trouble with your DBIDS or obtaining one?  Do you have those pressing questions you can’t seem to get the answers to?  You may find the answers are right at your fingertips.  But first, what is DBIDS?  The government Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) increases installation security and communication by receiving frequent database updates on changes to personnel/credential status, law enforcement warrants, lost/stolen cards and force protection conditions.  The system provides a continuous vetting anytime the DBIDS card is scanned at an installation and uses barcodes and biometrics to identify cardholders.

The Security Committee of Virginia Ship Repair Association invited CAPT Monty Ashliman, Jr., N3, CNRMA, Operations and Public Safety Program Director; Linda Vacca, N3, Operations and Public Safety Deputy Director; and Gina Dara, Systems Administrator to join their meeting on March 3, 2021 for a Q&A session.  Here is a sample of what they had to say:

Question: Is there an implementation plan across regions to move toward a national one-DBIDS-satisfies-all-system?  Currently, company travel teams performing work in other regions are typically issued a new and separate DBIDS badge at each location, while locally it is an accepted practice to allow a new installation to be added to their existing badge.  This does not seem to be the standard in other regions.

Answer: No. N3 will have discussions with the other Regions to standardization across the enterprise.  They certainly have the ability to do so and can here locally with the expectation of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY).  However, hardware verses software is a likely factor. “Having multiple DBIDS credentials creates a vulnerability,” said CAPT Ashliman.

Question: Is there any consideration of a process to grant individual access and clearance for all three installations (NNSY/JEBLFS/NSN) without having to go to each Base Pass & ID Office?

Answer: No, the system does not allow for that.  Individuals must visit each installation.

Question: As we have all experienced, there are instances where individuals are showing as approved on the CNIC contractor public web listing and when the employee goes to a Pass & ID Office, they are being told they are not on the list.  What can we do?

Answer: Email your discrepancy questions directly to: day_visitor_inquiries@navy.mil.  You should receive a response within two business days.

These are just a few of the important industry questions presented to CNRMA.

Many thanks are extended for the ongoing and tireless efforts of N3, CAPT Monty Ashliman, Linda Vacca, Gina Dara, and our industry friends and Sponsor at MARMC Industrial Security, John Johnson and Jocelyn Perkins.
