Human Resources Committee Holds Annual Seminar in a Virtual Format

On April 7th of this year, the Association’s Human Resource Committee held its annual HR seminar.  Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, the event was held virtually, via Zoom.   It was attended by 67 people from 41 member companies.  The seminar kicked off with a welcome from Association President Bill Crow and then offered a quartet of thirty-minute presentations, beginning with Mike Godwin, CEO of PBA Ipsum, speaking to the group on recruiting and hiring in the COVID era. Next up was Norberto Rosa-Ramos, the Director of the EEOC’s Norfolk Local Office.  Mr. Rosa-Ramos presented on complying with the laws enforced by the EEOC, with special emphasis on COVID-related issues.  Attorney Tom Lucas of the Jackson Lewis law firm then spoke to the group about tips and traps associated with the drafting and use of employee handbooks.  Finally, Dawn Angrisani, the HR Director for BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, delivered sound advice for training supervisors on deck plates leadership, addressed best practices for conducting workplace meetings, and offered practical tips for communicating employer policies to the workforce.

As in years past, the 2021 HR Seminar was certified for Continuing Education credits by both the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI), and each of the speakers’ respective PowerPoint presentations were made available to attendees through the Association’s website.  By any measure, this year’s HR Seminar was a great success, one for which the Committee thanks each of our talented speakers and everyone who attended last month’s event.
