35th Annual Golf Tournament: Virginia Ship Repair Association Members Go Above and Beyond

There was an overcast and a bit of misty rain on the morning of Tuesday, October 12, 2021 as volunteers and staff arrived at Cypress Point Country Club to set up for the 35th annual Virginia Ship Repair Foundation Golf Tournament. Soon, the rain stopped, the clouds drifted, and golf was in full swing for the day. Golfers checked in with the volunteer staff at registration to receive lunch and commemorative items in celebration of our 35th year. It was a beautiful fall day to tee off and enjoy an afternoon with cool refreshments along the course.

Registration and sponsorships were launched earlier in the year and with no surprise that all 144 golfer slots would quickly sell out. What is surprising is that they sold out with full sponsorships in less than twenty-four minutes, a record-setting time! 62 out of 310 member companies (20%) were sponsors, contributors, participants or volunteered. This year we were able to secure sixty-three door prize items along with sixteen big ticket items for the golfers. 

During the evening of the tournament, golfers rolled in for dinner with score cards in hand and high hopes of winning one of the fantastic prizes. Congratulations to HII Fleet Support Group LLC in winning first place! Coming in second was Johnson Controls Building Automation Systems, and Electric Motor and Contracting Co., Inc. placed third.

This year’s tournament was certainly one for the record books, raising 40% more funding compared to last year's. All proceeds benefited the Virginia Ship Repair Foundation, which focuses on community outreach, industry awareness, and workforce training and development. Know that your Association and Foundation Boards are committed to ensuring effective recruitment and development of tomorrow’s ship repair workforce. Your sponsorships and involvement have helped go a long way toward achieving this goal.

After thirty-five years of golf, have you ever heard of a Golf Tournament Queen? Neither had I, but I was soon wearing the sash and tiara to prove it. Many thanks to the entire staff of professionals at Virginia Ship Repair Association for this distinguished recognition. I am honored and humbled to be leading this annual event each year and serving the ship repair industry. Thanks for allowing me to serve you and this industry!

So many of our members and volunteers help drive this incredible tournament for the continued success I know we will see in 2022.
