March Luncheon Speaker: Captain Steven Stancy

The March General Membership Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, March 31 at the Portsmouth Renaissance. The guest speaker will be Captain Steven L. Stancy, Commanding Officer, Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC). Captain Stancy assumed command of Norfolk Ship Support Activity (Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center) in September 2013.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Captain Steven Stancy is a 1987 graduate of Northwestern University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  

Captain Stancy’s sea duty tours include Boilers Officer aboard USS Julius A. Furer (FFG 6), Combat Information Center Officer and Repair Officer aboard USS William H. Standley (CG 32), and Engineer Officer aboard USS Aries (PHM 5).

From 1993 to1995, Captain Stancy attended the Naval Postgraduate School, where he received a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  After graduate school, he qualified as a Navy Diving and Salvage Officer at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida.

Captain Stancy qualified as an Engineering Duty Officer at the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility (SRF) in Yokosuka, Japan from December 1996 to November 1999.  As a Ship Superintendent, he was responsible for the modernization and repair of USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) and USS KittyHawk (CV 63).  He was also the command’s diving officer and a qualified docking officer. 

Following his tour at SRF, Captain Stancy reported to the Commander, United States Pacific Fleet staff in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he was the Deputy Director for Surface Ship and Aircraft Carrier Maintenance and the Pacific Fleet Diving and Salvage Officer.  During this tour, Captain Stancy supported the underwater relocation of the Japanese Fishing Vessel, Ehime Maru, which sank after being struck by USS Greeneville (SSN 772) in February 2001, and the recovery of nine Japanese crewmembers, instructors, and students. 

In July 2003, Captain Stancy transferred to SUPSHIP Portsmouth, Virginia as the Engineering Officer.  In 2004, he became the Amphibious and Auxiliary Ship Class Team Leader when the Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) was formed.

Captain Stancy transferred to Norfolk Naval Shipyard in July 2005, and was assigned as the Military Deputy Project Superintendent for the 2006 USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) DPIA.  In January 2007, Captain Stancy deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, as an Individual Augmentee supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ reconstruction effort.  After his IA tour, Captain Stancy returned to NNSY as the Production Resources Officer (Code 900).

In June 2009, Captain Stancy returned to Yokosuka, Japan as the 26th Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center, where he was responsible for the maintenance, modernization and repair of the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet’s forward deployed naval forces in Yokosuka and Sasebo, Japan.  In August 2012, he reported to Commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic, as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Maintenance and Engineering.

His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards).
