Structural Welder

Job Description Ability to perform all types of welding using various processes. This will include; Oxyacetylene, Metallic Arc, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding. Welding Shop 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Master and 1st step class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities of machines. Duties and responsibilities Ability to complete the Welding process and make adjustments to the welding apparatus depending on the type of weld being performed. Ability to regulate gas pressure, select the proper torch tip, pre and post heat as required and weld butt, lap, fillet joints in flat, vertical and over head positions. Complete welds on mild steel, carbon steel, cast iron, copper, and their alloys by fusion and adhesion, as well as braze and solder ferrous and non ferrous metals. Ability to use jigs, clamps and positioners as well as select electrode. Receive job assignments from supervisor and carries out assignments as directed. Required to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Must be able to speak to others to convey information effectively so that the job can be completed in the manner it should be. Needs to have the ability to keep hand and arm steady while moving the arm or while holding the hand in one position. Have the ability to see details at close range while he/she is doing his/her job functions. Must have the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Be able to quickly move the hand, the hand together with the arm, or two hands to grasps, manipulate, or assemble objects. Have the ability to make precise coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. Must be able to weld 6G6 “steel pipe, stainless steel 6G pipe, aluminum plate and flux core plate. Must be certified in three position A361/2” plate by stick. Evolving knowledge of metal characteristics Metal repair and fabrication by oxyacetylene, metallic arc and inert gas shielding arc. Full knowledge of safety codes and practices regarding explosives gases and hazardous rays. Competencies All Welders will be required to pass all position, Multi-pass Butt Weld, Welder Qualification Machines and Tools. Communication Proficiency. Problem Solving/Analysis. Decision Making. Initiative. Design Techniques, Tools, and Principles. Mathematics Skills. Time Management. Work Environment Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical equipment. The work environment may be loud and need to be completed in tight spaces. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position. Travel Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected. Required Education and Experience High school degree or equivalent. Preferred Education or Experience Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting. Quality Assurance Welding Certification. All position fillet and butt welds using the following processes: SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) Heating - Oxygen/Propane Heating Torch Experience working in a physically demanding environment (shipboard, sub-assemblies, ladders, staging, etc.). Familiarity with OSHA regulations relative to the shipbuilding industry. Air Carbon Arc Gouging.Ability to properly use fillet and butt weld gauges. Additional Eligibility Qualifications Work involves varying degrees of precision and control where damage could be considerable. Attention and care required to prevent injury to others when performing maintenance work. Work involves considerable stooping, bending, and working in overhead structures and on scaffolds. Considerable glare emits from work, requiring the wearing of personal protective equipment. Exposed to moderate burns and exposed to flying objects, such as chips and scale. Accident hazard can involve severe cuts and bruises. Job site must be carefully enclosed to prevent injury to others from sparks and flying chips.
