Structural Field Engineer

Summary of duties – Structural Field Engineer applies a broad knowledge of structural work in engineering design, analysis, evaluation, and development of engineering and technical documentation and reports with communications, combat systems, and navigational systems on U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines. Provides senior technical support to the Project Manager in such areas as structural shipfitting, and structural supervision including material identification and procurement support, inventory management, installation, and testing as specifically required for structural work on U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines. Exercises discretion and independent judgment of a professional nature to complete installations tasks. Serves in lieu of, or in conjunction with, engineers in the completion of engineering assignments in relation to structural installations. Recommends changes and refinements for continuous process improvement. Can act as Project Manager, Program Manager or Installation Supervisor.  Periodically required to lift/move equipment up to and including 50 pounds. 

Specific description of duties

  • Oversees structural welding teams to include, as required, piping, HVAC and antenna platform welding requirements
  • Experience installing structural systems on ships and/or submarines by interpreting and utilizing NAVSEA approved drawings or similar
  • Perform shipfitting requirements in support of structural installations
  • Identifies problem areas and provides Condition Discrepancy Reports, Change Order Request Notices, and/or Liaison Action Request preparation
  • Identifies, analyzes, reports on, and corrects causes of equipment failures
  • Researches and selects pertinent equipment / material for structural installations
  • Perform ship/site validations to determine accuracy in drawings and identify changes to the drawings. and interferences not identified in the drawings
  • Performs engineering, quality, and safety audit / inspections
  • Provides technical expertise and support on structural installations and production
  • Conducts pre and post structural installation testing
  • Provides structural project status reports
  • Perform any other assignments or tasks as needed or requested by management to assist in accomplishing the organization’s mission, objectives and goals
  • Proficient with ALL Prism Maritime and required documentation
  • Possess the following certifications
    • PAI
    • AB
    • SCP
    • NDT LVL II
  • Must maintain current certifications
  • Provide weekly updates to WPM of structural work status
  • Provide weekly reports to WPM of structural teams performance/attendance
  • Overtime, to include weekend work, and travel outside the local areas is routinely required but not guaranteed

Education / Specialized training

  • High School diploma or GED is mandatory
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year, or Associates degree and six years, or 15 years related experience.
  • Degree should be in Engineering, Management, or a related field.
  • Non-degreed personnel must have 8 years’ technical experience in installation modification, troubleshooting and repair of shipboard structural installations including NAVVSEA governed hot work items in accordance with Military Standard procedures.
  • The desired candidate has obtained the following certifications as dictated by NAVSEA: Flux Core HY100 and Steel Stick and MIG aluminum, SS SMAW, CuNi GTAW, Fire watch certification, PAI, SCP, NDT LVL II
  • Comprehensive structural blueprint interpretation is required with specific experience in shipfitting on U.S. Navy Ships and/or Submarines
  • Comprehensive understating of all hot work requirements in reference to shipboard alterations

Security Clearance

  • Clearance up to secret level may be required.

Physical/Environmental Job Requirements

Physical requirements for the job may include the following:

  • Lifting/moving up to and including 50 pounds
  • Routinely climbing several flights of stairs
  • Performing tasks in confined spaces
  • Overseeing all structural team and requirements

Our work is primarily onboard naval vessels that may include variables of physical activity, i.e. stooping, climbing, walking, etc. 

In performing these duties, you may be required to work outdoors.  You will experience temperature variations, extremely loud noises and other physical hazards.
