Aluminum Welder/Fabricator
Summary:
We are hiring aluminum fabricators to build tactical and professional workboats. The position requires the use of manual and semi-automatic equipment to weld components and ability to expertly follow directions and read drawings to assemble and cut parts. This is fast- paced manufacturing work in a shop environment, with infrequent offsite work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits
- Fabricate aluminum components in a boat manufacturing setting.
- Weld components in 2G, 3G, 4G and 6G positions. Interpret a NAVSEA or AWS approved WPS (weld procedure specification)
- Use fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauge, bridge cam gauge for first in line quality checks as welds are completed, according to the correct NAVSEA and AWS fabrication document
- Set up or program welding power supplies with the ability to identify correct support gear needed for any weld process necessary to complete work activity.
- Proficient in plasma cutting and beveling plates.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
- Detect and troubleshoot faulty operation of equipment and/or defective materials and fix as required then notify management if replacement equipment is needed
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to join weldments, using processes such as GTAW, GMAW, GMAW-P
- Monitor the fitting and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion of material which is especially critical with the aluminum parts we will be constructing.
- Examine work pieces for defects, and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with NAVSEA and AWS specifications
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding and fabrication trade, such as angle grinders, die grinders, sanders, band saws, and bending equipment for pipe and sheet metal
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
- Knowledge, ability, and proficiency in fabrication and fixturing.
- Ability to work consistently with employees and maintain control of daily assignments and coordinate directly with a production manager/shop supervisor to maintain delivery of scheduled project milestones.
- Expertly follows WPS to ensure proper mil-cert filler wire and base metals are used in accordance with the work activity to ensure NAVSEA and AWS specifications are properly met.
- Perform work outside of trade when required
- Work to a SOW and QA work package while expertly reading applicable drawings and 3d models as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- Work Experience: Demonstrate related welding experience, or accredited Apprenticeship Program graduate or Journeyman Certificate accepted in combination.
- Proficient in GTAW 5xxx and GMAW-P 5xxx aluminum is a must.
- Ability to weld PQR plates to qualify the company for new processes
- Ability to be certified to the company’s Level 2 VT NDT procedures
- Candidates should have prior experience and qualification in accordance with applicable NAVSEA and AWS documents.
- Knowledge of a wide range of welding principles, processes, and techniques requiring correct weld joint identification in accordance with MIL-22D or AWS D1.1 and D1.2 for aluminum. The ability to identify and correct weld defects prior to an NDT inspector showing up on site providing acceptable and constant first-time quality
- Ability to interpret weld symbols and identify necessary weld sizes and joint configuration
- Ability to maintain dimensions and tolerances to specifications for in process fabrication.
- Ability to weld dissimilar metals but mostly focusing on aluminum.
- Ability to weld parts and structures that vary in size, shape, and thickness
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to assigned military/government installations as required for work activity
- Preferred Qualifications: weld certifications in multiple processes as required per company needs and extensive fabrication knowledge using many different types of sheet metal and fabrication tools.
- Certification and experience as a forklift and man-lift operator
Tooling Required:
- Locking tool box storage
- All necessary tools for fabrication and layout
- All necessary tools for welding
- Full Face Welding Shield
- The company will supply larger tools such as drills and grinders and items deemed consumable.
- All the basic tools need to be acquired within 90 days of employment. As needs are identified the tools necessary to do the job change and new tools will need to be purchased by the employee as the need arises.
Physical Demands:
- Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping, bending, crawling, reaching and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery, either indoors or outdoors in the elements and noisy conditions. Occasional lifting to 50+ pounds.
