(May also included Portsmouth, VA for future project sites based on awarded contracts)

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Boilermaker to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining boilers and related equipment across industrial settings. Your expertise will ensure the safe and efficient operation of boiler systems while providing exceptional service to clients in diverse environments. Local candidates only; no per diem offered.

 

The typical duties and responsibilities include:

- Interpret blueprints, sketches, and other specification documents to prepare for the construction and repair of boiler systems.

- Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame tanks or vats, following blueprints.

- Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feedwater connections in drums of water tube boilers, using hand tools.

- Examine boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, or vats to locate defects such as leaks, weak spots, or defective sections.

- Repair or replace defective pressure vessel parts, such as safety valves or regulators, using torches, jacks, caulking hammers, power saws, threading dies, welding equipment, or metalworking machinery.

- Shape seams, joints, or irregular edges of pressure vessel sections or structural parts to attain specified fit of parts, using cutting torches, hammers, files, or metalworking machines.

- Inspect assembled vessels or individual components, such as tubes, fittings, valves, controls, or auxiliary mechanisms, to locate any defects.

- Position, align, and secure structural parts or related assemblies to boiler frames, tanks, or vats of pressure vessels, following blueprints.

- Perform regular maintenance checks and repairs to ensure optimal boiler performance and adherence to safety standards.

 

Qualifications:

- 3+ years' work experience as a Boilermaker.

- Experience in a shipyard environment.

- Excellent welding and fabrication skills.

- Able to interpret technical plans and blueprints.

- Physically able to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.

- High school diploma or equivalent. Relevant certifications may be required.

Ability to obtain DBIDS.

This position requires work in a shipyard environment and can involve physically demanding tasks.

The job of a Boilermaker is to perform various tasks associated with assembling, repairing, and maintaining shipboard steam production systems. Following blueprints, boilermakers locate and mark reference points on the boiler foundation, using straightedges, squares, transits, and tape measures. Boilermakers may attach rigging and then signal crane operators to life heavy frame components and place these sections and other parts into place. They align sections using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, and turnbuckles. Boilermakers use hammers, files, grinders, and cutting torches to remove irregular edges for proper fit. They then bolt or weld the edges together. Boilermakers align attach water tubes, stacks, valves, gauges, and other parts and test entire systems temporarily in a fabricating shop to insure a proper fit before final assembly on the permanent site. Boilermakers usually maintain efficient systems by regularly inspecting the boilers and providing the necessary corrective actions to update the various components such as burners and boiler tubes. They also inspect the tubes, fittings, valves, controls, and auxiliary machinery and clean or supervise the cleaning of boilers using scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning solvents. They repair or replace defective parts using hand and power tools, gas torches, and welding equipment and may operate metalworking machinery to repair or fabricate parts. They also dismantle leaky boilers, patch weak spots with metal stock, replace defective sections and strengthen joints. The skilled Boiler Maker will be familiar with blueprint reading, use of associated hand and power tools, possess and ability to work on all boiler systems from low to high pressure.
Education
A career as a boilermaker typically requires a high school diploma, and anywhere from a few months to one year of experience working with the required tools and skills, particularly in a marine environment. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.

Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is usually needed, particularly with career-related tools and work in a marine setting.
