Job Description: Ship Repair Estimator

Location: Norfolk, VA

Reports To: Vice President, Operations

Position Overview

HyVal Industries is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Ship Repair Estimator to join our team. This role is critical in evaluating repair specifications, preparing accurate cost estimates, and supporting project planning for commercial and government vessels. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marine engineering, shipyard operations, or naval architecture, and a keen understanding of labor, materials, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Analyze technical specifications, drawings, and inspection reports to determine scope of work.

- Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.

- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure estimate accuracy.

- Conduct site visits and inspections to gather data and validate repair needs.

- Review customer RFQs (Request for Quotes) and RFPs (Request for Proposals) for compliance and completeness.

- Develop pricing strategies and submit competitive bids within deadlines.

- Track historical data and maintain cost databases for continuous improvement.

- Support contract negotiations and change order pricing as needed.

- Ensure estimates comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards (e.g., ABS, USCG, NAVSEA).

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field (preferred).

- 5+ years of experience in ship repair estimating or shipyard operations.

- Strong knowledge of ship systems, structures, and repair methodologies.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.

- Familiarity with government contracting and FAR/DFAR regulations (a plus).

 

Preferred Skills

- Experience with drydocking, hull repairs, mechanical systems, and outfitting.

- Understanding of labor productivity rates and cost control principles.

- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple estimates simultaneously.

- Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.
