General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great shipyards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years - the former Metro Machine Corporation and the former Earl Industries. Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
•Provide engineering support to a variety of shipboard repair projects at various work sites in compliance with customer quality, schedule, and requirements
•Communicate with and provide engineering support to a variety of trade shops, production work, planning function, or project work when needed
•Prepare and maintain, as directed, design studies, proposals, sketches (including purchase specifications, engineering calculations, etc.), test memos, and other engineering support as directed by the Planning, Engineering & Scheduling Director under the technical guidance of Senior Engineer or Engineering Specialist
POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
•Typically has a ABET accredited Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering Discipline
•E.I.T Certificate is desirable
•FEA Certificate/experience is desirable
•Minimum of 2 years shipboard repair experience within a public or private shipyard and/or ship systems operation with a Bachelor’s degree.
POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)
•Familiarity with shipboard equipment is desirable
•Ability to understand and apply regulatory body rules and regulations, US Navy, and Industry Standards
•Demonstrated technical writing skills is desirable
•Effective decision-maker requiring guidance
•Demonstrated AutoCAD skills
•Demonstrated Microsoft Office applications (Work, Excel, Power Point, etc.) skills
•Prior military experience (U.S. Navy) is desirable
•Experience of US Navy ship maintenance and repair processes and techniques is desirable
•Experience in ship technical problem resolution especially with hull, machinery, and coatings is desirable
•Participation in Engineering Trade societies dedicated to improvement of the Shipbuilding Industry is desirable
•Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing complex technical issues involving factual, qualitative, or abstract information including concise rationales for conclusions or recommendations
•Ability to create and maintain technical databases, prepare and present reports
•Ability to demonstrate customer service skills with various groups, organizations, and personnel and develop good working relationships and teams
•Ability to work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), travel locally or when requested by senior management travel to remote locations, and to work nights and weekends during peak workloads or when requested by the Engineering Manager.
•Ability to gain access to government facilities, to obtain a DoD security clearance, and to obtain a CAC card once employed by the company
Visual Requirements: The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electrician, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.
•Reports to the Planning, Engineering & Scheduling Director
•Will have no direct reports
•Must be able to communicate effectively with various internal and external customers, including high ranking individuals both verbally and in writing
•Ability to function within the company and/or oversee engineering projects with oversight and guidance
•Will be informed of priorities and allowed to schedule work as necessary to complete required tasks with guidance provided by Planning, Engineering & Scheduling Director, Senior Engineer, or Engineering Specialist
•Provide engineering support for development of work specifications and technical work documents
•Accomplish development and review of test memos, technical reports, and engineering responses
•Provide technical assistance to production trades in the accomplishment of work items; provide resolutions for technical issues and problems
•Interprets regulatory body rules, US Navy specifications, and industry standards
•Provide engineering calculations/analysis to support work in planning and execution stages
•Develop drawings/sketches/BOMs using engineering research and evaluation and CAD software
•Conduct non-conformance evaluations (DFS) of systems and equipment and provides documentation of the resolution
•Research and analyze various shipboard complex problems and propose solutions to those complications
•Provide assistance to higher level engineers
•Accomplish ship checks, as required, to accomplish tasks, on-site work scope validation, and technical evaluation in support of engineering requirements
•Ensure all products developed are in accordance with the company and customer’s quality, schedule, and cost
•Demonstrate professional and business skill aptitude
•As directed, participate in departmental or company CPI events
•Performs other duties as directed by the Planning, Engineering & Scheduling Director
•Responsible for providing engineering support to a variety of shipboard repair projects at various work sites
•Responsible for providing engineering support to a variety of trade shops, production work, planning function, or project work
•Responsible for completing all tasks within schedule, budget, and quality commitments; work products are accurate and conform to high standards of quality
•Responsible for providing engineering support as directed by the Planning, Engineering & Scheduling Director
•Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.
•Shipboard diesel engine repair and overhaul experience is desirable.
•Operation, trouble-shooting, modification, and repair of marine propulsion and support equipment and general shipboard systems experience is desirable.
•Autodesk Inventor experience is desirable.
